The Tucson area has been continually settled for over 12,000 years and has a long and colorful history. The town itself was founded in 1775, making it one of the oldest establishments in the western United States. Its location near the Mexican border contributes to its rich, multi-cultural history. The Tucson community is well aware of its heritage and proud of its preservation efforts, as evidenced by 16 historic districts in Tucson covering over 5,000 historic properties. Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona, which is one of the fastest growing states in the country. Close to one million people live in the greater metropolitan area, and each year there are several hundred thousands of visitors and seasonal residents. The Tucson Chapter of ARMA (officially the Southern Arizona Chapter) was chartered on July 26, 1979 and for the past several years has merged with the Phoenix Chapter. The intent of the Chapter is to serve all communities in Southern Arizona. We are now in the process of reestablishing a separate Chapter as the need for a locally based chapter has grown. Start up meetings to reestablish the Tucson Chapter of ARMA have been held with good attendance from the public and private sectors. Feedback from the meetings and surveys demonstrate that Tucson’s records managers are interested in strengthening their skills through networking with others in their field and having access to professional development opportunities. Efforts to reestablish the chapter are underway by a steering committee composed of record manager professionals from government and business industries.
